The Story

What are they used for?

Our Wool Nest Liners are ideal for nesting canaries and finches, but they can also be used for other small birds such as pigeons, doves and quails. These liners fit perfectly in clay nesting bowls and provide a warm, natural, hygienic and comfortable bed for the young. They’re a luxury product for much-loved birds!

Why Wool Nest Liners instead of Jute?

Both the wool felt liners and jute liners do the same thing – they provide chicks with a natural, cosy environment until they’re old enough to leave the nests and explore. The wool felt provides a natural alternative nest material that is less fine and doesn’t break apart as easy as jute which can easily be pulled apart and accidentally swallowed by young birds.

What are these Wool Bird Nest Liners made from?

Here at Chimney Sheep, we’re big on reusing things and minimising waste, and generally just doing our part for the environment. These Wool Nest Liners are made from the cut-off material when we’re busy making our Chimney Sheep draught excluders. Our round Sheep have always left us this diamond-shaped cut-out that usually gets cut down into our Felt Garden Mulch Shillies along with the rest of the scraps, but then we realised, it’s the perfect size of scrap to cut out a felt nest liner! Each liner is a 5” round piece of Herdwick wool and is 1cm thick. We collect the Herdwick wool ourselves as part of what we call “Operation Wool” – you can read more about it here.

We also try not to use plastic where we don’t have to, so this pack of 10 Wool Nest Liners come in plastic-free packaging!

What about wild birds?

Wild birds tend not to like liners so much, and from our experience, they’re more likely to just remove the liner from any type of nest before starting their own nest using twigs, leaves and grass clippings, as well as other things! We know they LOVE wool, so we do have Sheep Wool Nesting Material that can be left out for them to pick at before they dart off to their secret nests.
